ABOUT
ARTIST STATEMENT:
I have a deep love for painting the human figure. What draws me in is the challenge of likeness: capturing anatomy accurately enough that a figure feels alive, while still telling a story through it. In my work I am constantly exploring how to visually represent the form using various media, but keep coming back to oils. Sometimes I pose limitations on myself, like seeing how much I can remove without losing the essence of the person, restricting my color palette, or showing motion within the figure. These constraints push me to ask what a figure truly needs in order to be recognized as human.
I'm especially drawn to the way viewers bring their own experiences to the work. The stories they see often differ from the ones I set out to tell, and I've come to love that unpredictability as much as the process itself. It is an obsession that I keep returning to, finding new answers each time, and I cannot wait to create more!
BIOGRAPHY:
Miss Cakes [Emmy Kline] is an artist living and working in Raleigh, NC since 2015. She received her BFA from Ringling College of Art & Design and has held a variety of positions within the artistic community in Florida, New York, and North Carolina. This includes various gallery exhibitions throughout the years, a 4-week artist residency in 2022 at Chateau d'Orquevaux in the Champagne-Ardenne region of France, and her current job title of Resident Artist for Jerry's Artarama. This is where she tests artist materials and teaches Live on their social media platforms once a week promoting general knowledge of materials and techniques. This results in her daily work varying greatly in artistic style and media.
As of January 2025, Miss Cakes has also taken on the role of Tattoo Apprentice. She is studying under Sam Castro [@scastrotattoo] at Gold Hand Gallery, in Chapel Hill, NC. She is extremely excited to see how her traditional fine art skills translate into living artwork on the human form, but currently practicing, practicing, practicing on the basics!
